Location, location, location... self-builders invited to live by the water in pioneering Maryhill project

Plots of land are being made available for self-build starters to set up home by the water in Maryhill

It has waterways, wildlife and huge potential, according to city planners.

Now prospective self-build homeowners are being invited to transform six plots of waterfront land in the heart of Maryhill which are being released by Glasgow City Council.

The serviced plots are situated at Bantaskin Street in a wooded location close to the Forth and Clyde canal.

The homes are part of an extensive regeneration project to create a contemporary urban village with shops, cafes and community facilities.

Home starters who can see the potential for the land can attend an event at the weekend, where more details about the pioneering scheme will be given out.

Angie Doran is the self-build co-ordinator for Glasgow City Council. She says the project will appeal to people and families who want to invest in the regeneration of an historic part of the city.

Self-builders will be given advice on finance, design and planning through the course of the self-build project.

Ms Doran said: “The city council is keen to promote alternative, affordable models of housing. Glasgow’s population is growing and we want to retain people within the city by providing for growing households.

"Self-build provides the opportunity for people to work together – sharing costs and building relationships as they build their houses.  Self-builders invest emotionally in their homes and are more likely to stay in the community for the long term."

The information event the self-build project will be held on Saturday April 30 between 10.30 – 12.30pm in Maryhill Burgh Halls.

Anyone who is interested in building their own homes – either independently or with friends is welcome to come along to this event.

The development of sites for self- and custom-build homes in the city is part of Glasgow City Council’s People Make Glasgow Homestrategy, which aims for the building of 25,000 new homes over the next 10 years.
