Hundreds of stolen bikes left unrecovered as West End cyclists fail to report thefts

Police appeal for cyclists to report stolen bikes and register their machines to stamp out thefts

Hundreds of stolen bicycles at Patrick Police Office are going unrecovered by their owners, according to Glasgow West area inspector Bob Park.

More than 300 bikes of all shapes and sizes are brought in to the police office on Dumbarton Road every year.

They are either stolen property recovered by the police or bikes that have been confiscated by officers as suspected stolen cycles.

Cyclists who have their bikes taken are being encouraged to report thefts and then to follow up later in case property is recovered and at the police office at Patrick.

When Glasgow West End Today toured the police office, there were around 40 bikes piled in one corner of the police compound.

Area Inspector Bob Park said people should first take all necessary security measures to ensure their bikes are safe; record serial numbers, buy a good lock, and take pictures to help police if the bike is stolen.

He said: “In recent months we have realised we have got an increase in the number of cycles that have been recovered, either stolen or found property.

“We always try to match the cycles back to the owners or the losers, but in many occasions they are not actually being reported as lost or stolen.

“We would always check the serial number against the national Bike Register, but we have noticed that people are not reporting their bikes as stolen.

“Up to 300 cycles a year are being brought in and many of these after two months go to auctions.”
