The Birds, Casablanca and E.T. up for vote at open air cinema in Botanic Gardens

Public invited to vote for favourite films ahead of outdoor screenings in West End next month.

Film lovers can enjoy classic films in the open air next month at two special outdoor cinema screenings in the grounds of the Botanic Gardens.

A Byres Road business group has organised the summer evening events to drum up visitors to the West End.

The screenings are on Thursday August 18 and Friday 19, starting at 8.30pm and finishing at 11.30pm. Admission is free.

Classic: Will it be Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman on the Big Screen on the first night?

And the choice of films is being decided by a public vote.

For the Thursday screening, film goers can choose from any of the following over the next few weeks: Casablanca (1942); Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961); Some Like It Hot (1959); Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969); and The Birds (1963).

For the second night, the choice includes: The Goonies (1985), Back to the Future (1995); Ghostbusters (1985); Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981); and E.T. - The Extra-Terrestrial (1982).

Alien: E.T.is an all-time family favourite on the list for the Friday screening.

David Howat, chairman of the Byres Road Business Improvement District, said the event was perfect for the surroundings of the Botanic Gardens.

"The team at Byres Road & Lanes Business Improvement District have been working on a number of events for Byres Road, and we are especially pleased to be able to bring outdoor cinema to the Botanic Gardens for two nights.

"What could be better than watching a classic film in the wonderful surroundings of the Botanics, under the stars?"

Setting: Botanic Gardens makes for a spectacular outdoor cinema.

People are advised to make sure to bring their own seating, such as blankets or sun chairs.

The garden kiosk will stay open till late, selling hot dogs, popcorn and soft drinks.

Organisers say people should stay tuned for announcements of special offers in the local restaurants and shops for cinema goers.
