Kingsborough residents: we want to share our wonderful gardens on Gala Day

Kingsborough Gardens say they want people in the West End and beyond to enjoy their private gardens at inaugural Gala Day.

West End residents are being invited to enjoy one of Glasgow's most spectacular private gardens next month.

Families are in for an afternoon of entertainment and games at the inaugural Kingsborough Gardens Gala Day on Saturday August 6.

The fun-filled event will take place amid the stunning setting of the listed Victorian and Georgian properties that line the central green space.

Fun: The summer gala is the first to be hosted at Kingsborough Gardens.

Admission is £1 for adults and children are free. Any profits after costs will be donated to charity.

Kingsborough Gardens Residents Association is busy finalising the entertainment and activities for children.

Chair Kate MacLeary said residents were eager to be inclusive and share their gardens with the West End and the wider community.

Peaceful: The gardens are an ideal setting for a summer gala.

There will be live music with local acts and craft staffs. Gourmet caterers Surf Dogs will be doing the food and Grunting Growler, an independent craft beers company, will be supplying the drinks.

Kate said: "We have lots of stuff for the kids. We are going to have a tombola, a raffle and pètanque - we have a resident Frenchman so he will lead the way with that one.

"In previous years we have held an alfresco dinner, everyone cooks something and we all sit down to dinner.

Listed: The summer gala is set against the wonderful terraces and apartments that border the gardens.

"But we wanted something that would really include children. We have previously had fun days but they have died away as parents with kids have got older and new people have moved into the gardens.

"We want to do something that is a lot more inclusive, that opens up the gardens to the wider community.

"We do have a few young families in the gardens but we don't have enough of them.

"It would be a lovely thing if we could have children from the whole of the West End, Hyndland, further afield and Glasgow joining in, coming into Kingsborough, seeing what we are all about."

Games: A tombola, raffle and pètanque will entertain families.

She said: "I think there is this kind of perception that the fancier streets in Glasgow and the private gardens are somewhere where there is a bit of mystery about it.

"And actually it couldn't be further from the truth. People here are the most down-to-earth, lovely people.

"When we put on the fireworks event last year, it was such a roaring success. We absolutely loved having people here.

Fayre: Surf Dogs and Grunting Growler will be supplying the food and beverages.

"I guess it's about sharing what we have here in these beautiful gardens with the wider community, for everybody to be part of that and to enjoy it."

The Gala Day is from 2 o'clock till 5pm.
