Sport: Young tennis star Aaron serves up more success at West End tournament

Local tennis clubs turn out for West End finals day at Hillhead.

It was another good day for rising tennis star Aaron Purba at the West End Tennis Tournament.

The 12-year-old ace picked up another two trophies to add to his growing collection.

The Western Tennis Club member is already on the books at Tennis Scotland and is definitely one to watch as a new generation of young players emerge through the ranks.

Rising: Aaron Purba is currently ranked 1st in the west of Scotland for his age.

Aaron has been playing tennis since he was four years old.

In the West of Scotland and Glasgow he is ranked number one for his age. In Scotland, he is currently ranked 4th.

"I want to take tennis as far as I can. Tennis is probably one of the biggest things I want to do with my life when I get older.

"Playing for Scotland is one of my biggest goals. I am reserve at the moment for the Home Nations, and I am happy with that.

"But I want to try and get into international events as well."

Aaron is being coached by Ian Campbell at Western Tennis Club on Hyndland Road.

Aaron says his big tennis idol is Rafael Nadal. "I've like him for a long time since I was really wee. And I like Andy Murray."

Aaron balled-boy at the last Davis Cup event in Glasgow, and is due to do so again in September when the tournament returns to the city.

West End finals day was played at Hillhead Tennis Club following a summer of tournament matches held at local clubs across the West End.

Community: Tennis coach Julie Gordon says the tournament brings players together of all ages.

A new sponsor was found this year to make the tournament possible, new estate agency business Walker Wylie.

Participating clubs were: Hillhead, Western, Woodend, Kelvingrove, David Lloyd Renfrew, Broomhill and Dowanhill.

Julie Gordon, tennis coach and one of the tournament organisers, said: "The tournament really brings all the tennis players together from the area.

"We had 16 finals today ranging from 8 & under and up to over 45s Mens' and Ladies' doubles, so it really is a full community event.

"The standard was great today, and we were delighted that we got some sponsorship from a new estate agency Walker Wylie."
