CALA HOMES (WEST) SAYS 200 PEOPLE TURNED UP FOR JORDANHILL HOMES EVENT

More than 200 people from the community of Jordanhill attended an information event hosted by Cala Homes (West) earlier this month.

The home developer has given an update on its event of Wednesday December 7, which gave residents the opportunity to view its new housing proposals for the area in more detail.

Cala is proposing a development of townhouses, villa apartments, mews cottages and family detached homes at the former Jordanhill Campus site of the University of Strathclyde.

But the plans are likely to meet with strong opposition when an application is submitted in the New Year.

Jordanhill Community Council is taking a strong stance against the plans.

According to Cala Homes, key areas of discussion at the recent event focused on proposed access points, construction traffic, local schools, landscape proposals, proposed mix and design, retention of the David Stow, Graham and Douglas Buildings and car parking proposals, as well as timescales for delivery of the development.

Cala also detailed its plan to retain, enhance and improve many of the open spaces currently within the site, as well as providing new landscaped areas within the development.

The plans include what Cala says will be the sympathetic conversion of the B-listed David Stow building.

Jillian McNicol, Land Manager for CALA Homes (West) said: “Cala was pleased to engage with members of the Jordanhill community who came out to the information exhibition in significant numbers to discover more about the plans.

“We found that the community was very interested in the proposals and sought clarification on a number of points.

"Cala carried out this event on a voluntary basis and has responded to several information requests following the event.”

The University has acquired Minded to Grant Planning Permission in Principle (PPP) Consent for a residential developer – and, as preferred developer, Cala Homes (West) is seeking to provide new homes through the submission of a Matters Specified in Conditions (MSC) application in January 2017.

UNIVERSITY JANITOR RETIRING AFTER 43 YEARS SERVICE

Janitor David Doherty is retiring at the end of this month after 43 years at the University of Glasgow.

David has been the janitor at 1 Lilybank Gardens – home of the Institute of Health and Wellbeing - for almost 20 years.

Far from slowing down into retirement, just six weeks ago David sprang into action after an explosion on the street outside his building, saving a man from serious injury.

A contractor accidentally drilled through an electric cable and one workmen was hit by the full force of the fireball.

“There was a bang and a flash then a huge ball of smoke,” David told the university's Campus e-News.

He brought the man into his building and kept him cool with water until paramedics arrived.

“I knew there was no major problem with his breathing because he could speak, but we couldn’t risk anything like taking off his burned jacket."

David remembers joining the University back in the early 1970’s. "My friend on the darts team said ‘the Uni’s looking for guys’ so I just walked up the hill and asked for a job."

On plans for the future, he said: “I’m looking forward to being spontaneous, just throw some things in a bag and away I go. It’s somebody else’s shot to do the work!”

WHAT'S THIS? CLATTY PAT'S SET TO STRUT HER STUFF AGAIN LATER THIS MONTH...

It was a must-go-to-place for thousands of Glaswegians and students alike.

Now the famous nightclub name Cleapatra's - or Clatty Pat's to give the venue its affectionate moniker - is to be reprised later this month.

According to the Sunday Mail, founder Tina Conway has organised a one-off return of the club on December 29 in Glasgow’s west end.

Clatty’s became a much-loved ?institution and generations of clubbers still reminisce in various social media platforms about its heyday.

Tina, 61, has been organising the Clatty’s revival, which will reunite ex-DJs, bouncers and customers for a Christmas bash.

The night at the venue, now called Viper, is a 350-capacity sell-out.

Tina told the Sunday Mail: “I can’t believe the number of people who have phoned me and said, ‘My God, you are causing Facebook to crash.’

“I don’t really tell anyone that we opened Cleopatra’s but it came up in conversation with my dentist and he stopped the treatment to say, ‘I met my wife there. I can’t believe it. I’d love to go back.’

“It’s all come together. We’re even selling T-shirts on the night with ‘I winched yer da at Clatty Pat’s’ and ‘I met yer maw at Clatty Pat’s.’”
