Byres Road revamp: Partick Burgh Hall is new venue for public engagement event

City council launch poster for public launch workshop on February 23 for people to learn more about £9m scheme.

The first public engagement event for the £9m Byres Road makeover scheme will take place at Partick Burgh Hall.

Hillhead Library had been lined up for the event on February 23, but the venue has now been switched.

Glasgow City Council has also launched a poster with the details and time of what it calls a 'public launch workshop'. The event will start at 7pm.

The poster says: "Funding of £9m has been allocated through the Glasgow City Region Deal to make Byres Road better for people.

"This means improvements for walking, cycling, air and noise pollution, business and community activity.

"And there will still be room for buses, cars and delivery vehicles.

"Consultation and design work are starting now.

"Construction will take place from autumn 2018."

The improvement scheme will look at a full street redesign, with improvements benefiting groups such as cyclists and pedestrians.

Although the design work has yet to be done, it is likely the pedestrian experience will feature highly with improved surfaces, reduced street clutter and pavement seating.

But there are also likely to be improved routes for cyclists and schemes where they can exist more safety than they do presently with cars.

Watch: Senior city council planner Ewan Curtis explains the Byres Road scheme.

The makeover will also likely look at potential new civic spaces and how the public can be involved in the design and programming of events.

Early consultation has identified so-called 'priority spaces', including Ashton Road car park, Church Street triangle, and corners at Chancellor Street and Great George Street

The £9 million of funding for these public realm improvements will come from the £1.13billion Glasgow City Region City Deal.

The works will aim to improve connections to the Glasgow University campus.

Senior city planner Ewan Curtis told Glasgow West End Today that the investment was significant and would see major improvements.

"We are looking at significant investment in Byres Road and indeed at Partick Cross and into University Avenue.

"We will be looking at this investment to be tailored to improve the full length of the street, making it an attractive place to work, shop and play."
