All aboard … West End actors embark on Summer Holiday classic at King's Theatre

Musical stage production of hit film promises to be popular with all ages.

It was a box office sensation when it hit the big screen 54 years ago.

Now feel-good musical Summer Holiday is taking to the stage at King's Theatre next week.

And West End performers make up a large section of the cast.

Six local residents will be among more than 30 cast members bringing the show to life.

Musical theatre group The Lyric Club transport the audience back to the swinging sixties.

Based on the film of the same name, the play follows Don and his fellow London Transport bus mechanics on a Summer jaunt across Europe.

Many of the songs were made world-famous by Cliff Richard and the Shadows including Bachelor Boy, Move It, I Could Easily Fall in Love With You, Living Doll, and of course Summer Holiday.

Five of the film's songs went to number one within months of its release in 1963.

Jen McGuire, 29, from Knightswood, plays Alma in the show – one third of London singing group Do Re Mi.

She said: “I'm really looking forward to the show; it’s brilliant fun, and full of great dances and singing!

"It will be a real feel-good night out for both the audience and cast, and it’s such an amazing feeling when the audience are all out of their seats dancing and joining in with the show.”

Charing Cross resident Kathryn Andrew, 25, who plays fellow performer Angie, added: “I'm really excited to take on the challenge and honour of my first major principal role at the King's.

"Summer Holiday is one of those shows you can't help singing and dancing along to, and I can't wait for the audience to catch that Summer Holiday bug too.”

Lyric Club President, Morven McCallum – herself a club member for 25 years – added: “Summer Holiday is the perfect feel good show to brighten up the gloomy days before the real summer begins.

"Packed with lots of well-known and upbeat songs, a light-hearted script and teamed with an energetic and enthusiastic cast, we invite you to join us for a fun and enjoyable evening's entertainment to blow the winter cobwebs away.”

Summer Holiday will be on at the King’s Theatre, Glasgow, from Tuesday 7 March to Saturday 11 March, 2017. Tickets cost £10-£24 and are available at click.
