'Gala Day is about celebrating community and greenspace in Yorkhill & Finnieston'

The event has been organised by Yorkhill & Kelvingrove Community Council with Yorkhill Housing Association which is celebrating its 40th year.

A West End community will come together at the weekend for its second annual Gala Day.

Yorkhill & Finnieston will welcome residents and visitors to Overnewton Square on Sunday (Sept 24).

The Gala Day has been organised by Yorkhill & Kelvingrove Community Council with Yorkhill Housing Association which is celebrating its 40th year.

Community council secretary Lee Grant says the event will be a great occasion.

"This is a day when Yorkhill and Finnieston can celebrate their community and greenspace.

"We are really wanting to improve the parks in the area.

"The Gala Day is a great way of showing how these spaces can be used.

"We want as many people as possible to turn up and enjoy the sights and activities."

One highlight of the day will be a Dog Show in partnership with Well Groomed West End - Glasgow on Old Dumbarton Road, Yorkhill, Taking place between 2 and 2:30pm.

Judging will be for the following classes: Best Junior Handler, The Loveliest Lady and Dog, Most Fabulous Fella and Dog, Waggiest Tail, Most Awesome Eyes and the Judges Own Favourite.

The judge will be Margo Thomson.

"So, spread the news far and wide and bring your pooch along," says Lee.

Elsewhere, there will be games and fun for all the Kids.

A bar is provided by Grunting Growler from Old Dumbarton Road.

Live music will be provided by local artists… David Currie, Amy Papiransky, Blair Teska and Kieran Ferguson.

Lee says: "We have mini professors, face painting, terra hoop (hula hooping), play on pedals.

"The local fire station will have an engine on site for kids to see.

"There will be burgers, hot dogs - and a raffle with donations from many of the fantastic businesses in Yorkhill and Finnieston.

"All monies raised will be split between the Glasgow Children’s Hospital and our Community Council for us to spend on local improvements."

* Yorkhill & Finnieston Gala Day is on between 11am and 4pm at Overnewton Square - behind Firebird bar and restaurant on Old Dumbarton Road.
