Hyndland, Hughenden & Dowanhill West to have a say on restricted parking zones

The rollout of parking zones has proved controversial with some businesses and communities.

The starting gun has been fired on the next wave of parking restrictions in the West End.

A public consultation exercise is now under way for the Hyndland, Hughenden and Dowanhill West area.

The process follows similar exercises in Dowanhill & Byres Road, and the soon-to-be-activated central Patrick zone.

A city council notice was issued this week and circulated to local businesses and organisations.

It says: "Glasgow City Council are writing to inform you of the commencement of a voluntary consultation for the proposed Hyndland, Hughenden and Dowanhill West area parking controlled zone prior to the commencement of the statutory traffic regulation order (TRO) process.

"Glasgow City Council is currently undertaking the development and introduction of significant parking control schemes throughout the Glasgow area."

The wider Partick area has been split into the smaller areas listed above to make the legal process manageable.

But the phased rollout has proved controversial with some businesses and communities.

Shops and outlets in Byres Road said the new restrictions had affected trade.

Some business owners have struggled to meet the £700 cost of annual business permits.

And some residents have accused the council of cashing in by charging £50 for permits when spaces are readily available anyway.

But residents in other areas have welcomed the measures.

The restrictions have freed up streets clogged up with commuter drivers.

TURNOVER

And the council claims the measures have improved traffic flow by increasing the turnover of parking spaces.

Controls also maintain access for emergency service, refuse collection and delivery vehicles.

The restrictions for the central Partick area are due to come in effect on Monday October 16.

The latest consultation on the Hyndland, Hughenden and Dowanhill West area will see a public exhibition at Partick Library from Monday October 30 to Monday November 6.

Council officers will be at the library to answer public questions on Tuesday October 31, Thursday November 2 and Friday November 3.

The notice adds: "A letter will be issued to all affected addresses within the proposed zone providing a brief summary of the proposals and will also inform of the public exhibition."
