The group wants a say in plans to breathe new life into the famous West End street.

Co-ordinator Euan Muir is calling for a greater commitment to reduce motor traffic volumes under the proposals.

Euan told Glasgow West End Today: "The biggest detractor on Byres Road is the large volume of motor traffic.

"Doing something about that will help everyone I think - both pedestrians and cyclists.

"Looking at the proposals that are being put forward, I think pedestrians are sort of being considered.

"But there has not yet been a firm commitment to cyclists - they are not putting forward cycling as the way we can get more people on to Byres Road as a substitute for the car."

GATHER

The group are inviting as many people as they can to join in the event.

Cyclists will gather at Riverside Museum tomorrow (Sunday Oct 22) for 10:45am.

They will leave at 11:00am to ride the length of Byres Road and arrive at Vinicombe St around 11:15am.

There, they will hand out leaflets before enjoying a spot of lunch in the local cafes.

They hope to make the point that more cyclists would bring economic benefit to the area.

Campaigners say they want a future Byres Road that is "not dominated by motor traffic but is instead a pleasant walking and cycling environment for all".

Euan, who lives in Partick and studies at Glasgow University, said: "We’re riding tomorrow so people can demonstrate their support for a better Byres Road."

OPTIONS

Consultants are currently drawing up options for Byres Road under a £9m improvement scheme funded by City Deal cash.

Early proposals have included wider pavements, some cycle lanes, and narrower carriageways to reduce traffic speeds.

The team is due to report shortly on further options for the road.

Work on the scheme when decided and approved is not expected to begin until later next year.
