The Army Reserve unit is based at Walcheren Barracks on Hotspur Street in Maryhill.

Lisa Davies with the reserves said the lunch was a way of giving something back to the community.

"We are trying to engage with the local community - and what better way than reaching out to elderly people at Christmas.

She said: "We know there are people out there who want some company and who would love to join us for a chat and a bite to eat."

"It's about reaching out to elderly people who maybe alone and isolated and could do with some company and some hot food."

Guests can enjoy activities including bingo, Christmas music and an appearance by Santa.

It is the first time 6 Scots have organised at festive lunch and they say they have room for 100 guests.

Calls have gone out to local elderly groups and homes, but Lisa says they want people from across the West End to come along.

"Anyone in the West End of Glasgow is invited - from Maryhill to Partick and Whiteinch."

Local supermarkets are supporting the event with offers of party food and decorations.

Guests can find the barracks close to the Botanic Gardens and at the back of Tesco on Maryhill Road.

The Army says in some circumstances they may be able to provide transport but they advise that people enquire in advance.

* The lunch is on Wednesday December 6 between 10am and 2pm.
