Eight in a row ... Glasgow University does it again to lift coveted Glasgow Taxis Cup

The competition saw over 700 students participating across 16 different sporting disciplines including athletics, badminton, hockey and netball.

Glasgow University has made it eight in a row.

Its sports team has been crowned winners of Scotland’s largest student varsity sporting competition, the Glasgow Taxis Cup.

The university edged out city rivals Strathclyde and Glasgow Caledonian to take the crown.

The competition saw over 700 students participating across 16 different sporting disciplines including athletics, badminton, hockey and netball.

The day-long event concluded at the Scotstoun Sports Campus.

Points were allocated to the winner of individual sports events in order to decide the victorious university.

Isabella Heath is sports president at Glasgow University Sports Association.

'TENSE DAY'

She said: “It’s great to see the University of Glasgow managing to retain the Glasgow Taxis Cup for an 8th year in a row.

"It’s always a tense day trying to find out all the results from the 21 events but our teams did it again.

"Thank you to University of Strathclyde and Glasgow Caledonian University for helping to put on such a great sporting spectacle and showcasing the incredible sporting talent we have in this city.

"Also a huge thank to Stephen Flynn and Glasgow Taxis for their continued support of the event.”

Chris Daisley at Glasgow Caledonian University said: “GCU Wolves are very proud to take part in the Glasgow Taxis Cup.

'WELL DONE'

"We are delighted to win the athletics event this year.

"Well done to all the students who took part and thanks to Glasgow Taxis for their generous sponsorship.”

Habbi Linton for Strathclyde University said: “What a great day for student sport.

"Congratulations to the University of Glasgow, it was very well deserved.

"It breaks my heart to see us not win but I am very proud of everyone who took part.

"This is a learning experience - we will come back faster, stronger and better next year. The trophy will be ours.”

'PROUD SPONSORS'

The event, now in its 15th year, has been supported by Glasgow Taxis Ltd. since 2011.

Glasgow Taxis chairman Stephen Flynn, speaking on behalf of the executive committee, said: “Glasgow Taxis are proud to sponsor Scotland’s largest student varsity competition for yet another year.

"The Glasgow Taxis Cup brings together three great Glasgow institutions for a showcase of high-level sport that is played in the right spirit.

"Whilst there can only be one winner, all the players and staff involved are a credit to their universities and have contributed towards another successful year of competition.”
