Open house ... Scotland's first restaurant 'residency' is announced at SWG3 venue

The concept, which has taken hold in London, is a way of keeping things fresh and exciting for customers.

Writers take them up. So do artists. And even musicians.

Now a team of street food chefs has taken up 'residency' at a city venue.

The link-up between SWG3 and Ka Pao is the first restaurant 'residency' announced in Scotland.

The Thai-food collective will take over the venue's new Acid Bar restaurant.

After a month or two, it will be all change again - and a new team of chefs will make the restaurant its home.

The concept, which has taken hold in London, is a way of keeping things fresh and exciting for customers.

SWG3 is Scotland’s leading multi-discipline arts and events complex based in the former galvanisers yard in Eastvale Place.

The venue's Acid Bar, unveiled last month, will host Ka Pao for an initial 4-week period, offering food lovers the opportunity to enjoy South East Asian-inspired cuisine.

'Popular concept in London'

The first evening residency will take place on Thursday June 14 and will run every Thursday, Friday and Saturday until July 7.

Tickets cost £30.00 and include a set menu dinner, served sharing style, and an arrival cocktail.

SWG3's founder Andrew Fleming-Brown, better known as Mutley, said: “Residencies are a popular concept in London, but haven’t really been developed here in Glasgow.

"People are always looking for new dining experiences and Scotland's street food scene has never been stronger, so hopefully this is something new and exciting for foodies to get their teeth into.”

Ka Pao takes its guidance from the cooking of Southeast Asia, fusing traditional and modern styles.

Some of the dishes from the specially created sharing menu include ‘Coley cakes and Thai basil’, ‘White crab and kalamansi lettuce wrapper’ and ‘Lamb neck, green peppercorn and lemongrass’.

Ka Pao have previously held pop-up events at Café Strange Brew, Yardworks Festival and SWG3’s outdoor gigs in the Galvanizers Yard.

Head chef Sandy recently returned from working at the Michelin-starred Nahm in Bangkok.

He said: “SWG3 is a real incubator for creativity in Glasgow, so we are very excited to be joining the community down here and to call the venue home for the next few weeks.”

Similar to SWG3’s rotating exhibition programme, the Acid Bar will welcome different guest restaurants and street food vendors throughout the year.

The programme, which will run indefinitely, is designed to showcase the very best of Scotland’s food scene.
