Peter Donegan: 'Playing Glasgow is like a homecoming because of my dad Lonnie'

Peter's show at Broadcast on Sauchiehall Street will mix his father's hits with his own acclaimed songs.

He's the son of a famous son - and he and his Country music band play Glasgow next week.

Peter Donegan has been playing music ever since he can remember thanks to his Glasgow-born father, the Godfather of Rock n'Roll and King of Skiffle Lonnie Donegan.

Donegan Snr passed away 16 years ago this month after a career that inspired a generation - including messrs Lennon and Mccartney - to pick up a guitar and storm the world.

In his son, the legacy lives on.

Peter's show next week at Broadcast on Sauchiehall Street will mix his father's hits with his own acclaimed songs.

Ahead of 'An Evening With Peter Donegan’, the musician said: "It's always treated as a homecoming because dad was originally from Bridgeton in Glasgow.

"The city has always loved its music, but there's always a special feeling in the air for me, when I’m there.

"Country music was always ingrained in his music, so I’ll be including some songs from my recent album in this special Country n Skiffle ‘Evening With…’”

Peter, 35, says the set will also mix songs that inspired his father and numbers that have inspired him along the way.

"There's going to be stories in there - people can ask me questions on stage, it doesn't mean that I'll answer them, but you can ask.

"In all sincerity, I talk to the audience - I tell them little stories behind the songs, things that inspired dad.

"And we always do a Lonnie Johnson number because that's where dad got his blues guitar style playing from.

"And it's also where he got the Lonnie part of his name from.

"But dad always encouraged me to write my own material as well, and that's why all my stuff is there as well."

Peter only took to the guitar after his father died.

His first instrument had always been the piano.

Peter said: "My dad tried to get me to play the guitar when I was very little but my draw was always towards the piano.

"I was inspired by Fats Waller, Fats Domino, and Gerry Lee Lewis.

'Opening act'

"That was great because I then became dad's piano player for his last few tours, and I was the opening act on the piano."

Amongst Peter's own admirers are Nora Guthrie (daughter of seminal folk musician, Woody Guthrie) Crystal Gayle and Billy Bragg, both of whom recently appeared on stage with him at ‘A Night For Lonnie’ event in London.

His highly-anticipated Country album, ‘Superman’ (2017) was recorded in Nashville, its original songs ranging from pure Country to Country Rock.

Peter, who splits his time between his home in Florida and London, has never been based in Scotland - but says he "loves Scotland, and loves taking days out there".

"A lot of British country bands come down from Scotland, and one of them, Kevin McGuire, will be on with me when I play Glasgow.

"This is a breakaway for me to do my own thing and to do my dad's material as well, because a massive part of the set will always be dad as well.

'Immensely important'

"Dad's legacy was huge, and it's to see people light up when you start singing Pick a Bale of Cotton and of course Rock Island Line, which changed the British music industry.

"I am always going to include those hits because they are immensely important, first and foremost, and secondly, I just love doing it.

"I am proud and I will always try and elevate and keep dad's profile there."
