Writing is on the wall for male-dominated street art and design at Finnieston venue

The mural depicts the silhouettes of five women from different cultures.

A collective of leading female street artists has left its mark at one of Scotland's top venues.

The designers who operate under the name Cobalt came together at SWG3 in Finnieston to celebrate International Women's Day 2019.

The foursome - Kat Loudon, Chelsea Frew, Erin Bradley-Scott and Edda Karólína - have unveiled a new 13ft high mural at the centre's legal graffiti yard.

The striking design 'Celebrate Women' is the very first for the project working together.

The mural depicts the silhouettes of five women from different cultures.

One of the four artists, Chelsea, said: "The majority of mural art in Glasgow has been carried out by a small number of male artists.

"We felt it appropriate for our debut piece to celebrate women on International Women’s Day."

SWG3 has become synonymous with the graffiti scene in recent years.

'Fantastic'

The venue holds the annual 'Yardworks' graffiti festival - the UK's largest festival dedicated to street art.

The three-day event attracts hundreds of artists from around the world.

The fourth Yardworks festival will take place in May.

Gaz Mac is studio director at SWG3 and the driving force behind the venue's Yardworks graffiti festival.

He said: "Only 30 percent of artists represented in galleries are women, despite the fact that 60-75 percent of art students are female.

"While we welcome all artists to the Yard to use the legal wall space, it's fantastic to see more women coming through the gates - and creating celebratory works like this."
