Hyndland Road takeaway boss Marco gets go-ahead at last to open new restaurant

It means Marco’s two adjacent shops will become one.

Pizza Magic owner Marco Stevenson has finally secured planning permission to transform his business.

After a five-year battle, the popular businessman has the go-ahead to create a pizza restaurant at his premises on Hyndland Road.

Location: The new pizzeria would take up the position of Marco's existing premises at 70 and 82 Hyndland Road.

It means Marco’s two adjacent shops will become one, with a mezzanine eating area and outside tables.

And after such a wait, it was Glasgow West End Today that broke the news to the owner.

We checked the city's planning website after being alerted to the decision on social media.

Marco said: "I am absolutely delighted that the wait is finally over.

"Now I can get on with making the restaurant a reality after so long."

"Well done - that's great work."

Glasgow city planners granted approval subject to conditions via its planning portal.

The new eatery will have seating for around 40 people inside and around 60 outside.

Three letters of support were received from the chairman of the West End Festival, Glasgow North MP Patrick Grady, and former Lord Provost Bob Winter.

There were no objections.

A supporting planning statement read: "The applicant has traded from the premises for almost 30 years and has in that time developed a reputation for quality food for which people travel some distance to enjoy.

"The applicant is a leading light in the local community and was one of the principle parties in the creation of the adjacent community park …"

"Destination restaurant'

The application argued that the unit next-door to Pizza Magic was no longer viable as a retail shop.

The opening of the nearby Sainsbury Local store two years ago effectively forced the closure of Marco's former grocery shop.

The statement said the proposal would see the creation of a "destination restaurant based on the existing pizza outlet".

The new extended restaurant will "enhance the dining experience and offer both inside and outside dining".

"It will be a place to wine, dine, meet friends and in so doing foster and develop the strong community spirit in the area."
