'Gaun Yersel' … how Jackie turned illness into a bucket full of laughs for Websters

The lecturer and former actor returns to the stage after she drew up a bucket list following a serious illness.

Hiring a theatre and putting on your own comedy show isn’t on everyone’s bucket list but one West End “wummin” has done exactly that.

This weekend Jackie Troy takes to the boards at Websters Theatre on Great Western Road to perform her one-woman show 'Gaun Yersel'.

The warm and witty comedy takes a nostalgic look back at what Glasgow was like for a 'wean' in the late 70s and 80s.

Jackie shares hilarious family anecdotes and fond memories of her upbringing at the high-rise flats in Knightswood and some of the mischievous goings on there.

It was during a health-scare when Jackie decided to draw up a bucket list - which also included driving a tank - and decided to write, direct and perform her own show at an “actual theatre”.

Jackie, 51, a lecturer by day, said: “I love making people laugh, and over the years my friends have encouraged me to take it a step further.

“Being unwell made me realise life is too short so I started with a script and here we are.

"I am thankfully now fit and healthy and about to put on a show, in an actual theatre in front of an audience. Gulp!”

Jackie is no stranger to the stage, however, as she trained as an actress at the then Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, enjoying a career in touring theatre before moving into education.

She also has previously written shows for Mayfest and sketches for the The Karen Dunbar Show.

Jackie, added: “I am looking forward to getting back out there again and hopefully people will enjoy some of the stories I have to tell.”

Gaun Yersel, which is on Saturday March 14, has sold out but Jackie hopes it may well be the first performance of many.

“Either that or my friends will take the mickey out me for years to come,” she said finally.
