West End shops, cafes and restaurants turn to deliveries in face of virus turmoil

Businesses here and elsewhere are being forced to change quickly or face going under.

Businesses are having to adapt fast in a bid to survive the crisis caused by coronavirus.

In the West End, many shops, cafes and restaurants are starting delivery services to keep money coming in.

These are desperate times for people's health and livelihoods.

But businesses here and elsewhere are being forced to change quickly or face going under.

Food and drink venues are being hit particularly hard.

Partick vegan/vegetarian restaurant Root Candy only opened on Hyndland Street at the start of the month.

The business said it had been forced to lose staff and "regroup".

The restaurant remains open but is offering a service for collection and free delivery within the West End.

A Facebook post reads: "We WILL survive as a business, as individuals and as a community if we work together.

"We WILL all come out of this stronger, more appreciative of the simple things in life, of each other and our world."

Further along Hyndland Street, Italian diner Rossini has reduced its covers for safety reasons but remains open.

'Incredibly difficult'

The business says it is "working on a collection service with special offers and also delivery for people (who) can’t collect".

By Kelvingrove, restaurant Gloriosa says it has "made the incredibly difficult decision to close".

The restaurant which opened where Firebird used to be at the top of Argyle Street says it is working on a collection / delivery service.

The Hug and Pint venue on Great Western Road announced its closure earlier this week.

A hardship fund has been set up to support staff.

In the meantime, the team have set up a home delivery service - The Hug at Home - for dishes along with beers, wines, cider and soft drinks.

A spokesman said: "This new service has been set up in order to raise money to directly financially support Hug and Pint (and related) staff who are out of work during the venue's current closure."

Hisashi Kuboyama, development manager of the Federation of Small Businesses, said: “Small businesses and the self-employed are feeling the impact of coronavirus.

"The coming weeks and months now look very tough indeed.

“Lots of independent businesses have stepped up and are doing things differently to support their local communities.

'Help'

"But to keep their businesses going, they need your help.

"And there are a lot of things you can do to help your local small businesses – for example, you can use their delivery services; buy vouchers for their products or checkout their online shops and services.

"We can all play our part in giving local firms in the west end the best chance to succeed in these difficult circumstances.”
