'If you help us, we'll help the community' - Peter McKenna, co-owner The Gannet

The award-winning Finnieston restaurant was one of the first to close earlier this month as coronavirus took hold.

Gannet boss Peter McKenna has appealed for support for his community meals venture in a new video.

The award-winning Finnieston restaurant was one of the first to close earlier this month as coronavirus took hold.

We reported how Peter and his staff had launched a crowdfunding campaign to use the restaurant's kitchens to cook food for vulnerable groups and people self-isolating.

The Gannet has moved quickly to keep its staff working and providing meals for the community.

Now the restaurateur has released a video with friend and TV presenter, Glasgow chef and comic Hardeep Singh Kohli.

Peter says: “As soon as we closed we realised, ‘what are we going to do?’

“We have got a beautiful kitchen downstairs, and we have got chefs that are engaged and want to do something.

'Need it most'

“We want to raise as money as possible to feed the community.

“We are using the Crowdfunder money to buy the produce, to cook the meals at The Gannet, and distribute it to people who need it most.”

He said the generosity so far has been “astounding”.

Nearly £3,000 has been raised of the £15,000 target.

Peter and his restaurant manager have been helping to deliver chilled, packaged meals cooked by the restaurant's chefs.

Everyone hopes the plan works out to avoid staff being laid off.

“If you help us, we will help the community,” Peter says in the minute-long video.

“We are doing this through Possil Community Centre and we are doing this through the Drumchapel Food Bank.

“The more money we can generate the more people we can reach.”

Peter said earlier: “If it all goes well we could be generating a lot of food and be doing a lot of good in the community.

“What we are giving away is not substandard, it is going to be the same as we usually cook.

“We want people to have a bit of comfort at this time."
