Key change … music couple find harmony in new coffee shop

The couple were both working in the music industry when Covid hit and the change in circumstances demanded a life rethink.

Kerri and Dave Rice are celebrating the start of a new business that was brought about by the pandemic.

The couple were both working in the music industry when Covid hit and the change in circumstances demanded a life rethink.

Eighteen months on, and the husband and wife team have just opened a coffee shop, Lost World Coffee Co, on Great Western Road.

And they have also recently celebrated the birth of a baby son - the same week they took the keys to the new shop.

Musician Kerri, better known by her stage name Kerri Watt, said the new business had been a blessing.

“The coffee shop is great timing for us.

“I didn’t know how I was going to have a career, a steady business and a family.

'Blessing'

“And through all the awful things that Covid brought, this shop was a bit of a blessing.”

Dave was working as a merchandise manager for acts including Paulo Nutini and Rick Astley.

His job took him all over the world until the pandemic hit.

He was seeking a change anyway and the coffee business had always been a dream.

“We jumped at the chance - it’s been great to get the place ready and open for business.”

The coffee shop was formerly Il Cappuccino, which belonged to Kerri’s sister Amber.

She wanted to give up running the premises and concentrate on her cakes and confectioneries business.

Lost World Coffee Co has had a full makeover and rebrand.

It offers bagels with fillings including the ‘Italian Stallion’ which loyal ‘II Cap’ customers will know.

All its disposal cups and packaging are friendly to the planet.

Kerri, who grew up in Milngavie, said: “We wanted our ethics to be about the environment and sustainability.

“The cups, lids and all the wrapping that we put on the bagels can all be tossed in with the food waste.

“Vegware take it all away and they turn it into compost. Everything can be recycled.

“We have got no single-use plastics in here at all.

“All our drinks are in cans and bottles, and even our crisp packets are fully compostable.”

Kerri has put her performing career on hold but continues to write and record while being a mum.

She has played shows across Europe supporting the likes of Coldplay and Celine Dion.

She said: “I was living in London with a small team and playing big shows.

“I had a really great live career for six years or so, and I finally brought out an album at the start of this year.

“But now I’m loving the coffee shop and being a new mum.”
