‘Looking back, it has been another remarkable year’

Business owner John Turner offers some seasonal notes from Byres Road this Christmas, amid talk of Omicron and kindness.

Is it December already? How did that happen!

Looking back, it has been another remarkable year, especially as a small business owner, writes John Turner.

It started with a further lockdown that none of us would have guessed would last for nearly four months, and since then it has been a case of a slow but steady recovery.

The recent news of the Omicron variant is a new cause for concern, but let’s all be careful, mask up when we need to, get our booster jags, and together we can get through it.

One thing that has sustained my wife and I through the year – once we opened after lockdown – have been the many kind words that we have received from our customers, welcoming us back and wishing us well.

I have genuinely lost count of how many times this has happened, and my old heart is very moved every single time.

So on behalf of my wife and myself, and on behalf of all the businesses in the West End – thank you, your kind words mean so much to us.

Thank you for choosing to shop local and continuing to support the unique range of businesses in Byres Road and the Lanes.

Speaking of kindness, the Byres Road & Lanes BID are delighted once again to be partnering with the wonderful folk of Social Bite.

‘Overwhelming’

The charity’s Festival of Kindness stall is based at the Christmas tree in Vinicombe Street, where you can give a gift or make a donation.

Social Bite is inviting people to give this Christmas.

Last year the good folk of the West End were overwhelming in their generosity, in spite of all the restrictions, and I am sure it will be that same this year.

And if you haven’t seen the tree, do go and take a look – it is FAB-U-LOUS, as Craig from Strictly would say!

If you are part of, or know, a local choir from a church or school, or an amateur singing group, then you would be very welcome to add to the Christmas cheer by singing around the tree.

All that we ask is that main pavement and access points to Vinicombe Street should be kept clear, and any donations offered to you should go to Social Bite.

All that is left for me is to say have a wonderful festive season, and that you and all those you love may enjoy the love, peace and joy that accompanies the message of Christmas.

Until next year.
