We take a glimpse inside new Sikh temple ahead of grand opening

Finishing touches being made to Scotland's largest place of worship which is due to open this weekend

The final push is on to ready Glasgow's newest gurdwara and largest place of worship for its grand opening at the weekend.

The magnificent Sikh temple in Berkeley Street, Anderston has been five years in the building at a cost so far of £9 million.

Central Gurdwara Singh Sabha Glasgow will be the fourth gurdwara to open in Glasgow serving the city's 10,000 Sikhs.

Over the next few days, an army of workmen will be present round-the-clock up until its grand opening this Sunday when Scotland's political, faith and civic leaders are expected to attend.

Many hundreds of worshippers, invited guests and members of the public are expected to visit the temple in the West End for the event.

Mr Gurnam Singh Dhami, the Treasurer of Central Gurdwara Singh Sabha Glasgow, described what would happen on Sunday.

He said: "We start with a religious ceremony, then religious song, and then we all come out to walk around the streets in the Charing Cross area.

Prayer: Final preparations being made to the stunning new worship spaces at the Gurdwara

"When we come back we are entering the gurdwara with the Guru Granth Sahib (the Sikh Holy scripture) for the first time. After we come we place the Guru Granth Sahib on a special place inside the Gurdwara.

"We then take the first blessing from the Guru Granth Sahib, words written by our Gurus for the official opening.

"Then we are putting the new clothes on the pole outside the gurdwara and we are starting all the programmes for the rest of the day."

The gurdwara will be able to accommodate 1500 worshippers, and will be Scotland’s only purpose built gurdwara

Due to a funding shortfall, the Gurdwara committee has been raising funds from the Scottish Sikh community. A target has been set to raise £1m towards the cost of the temple.

Materials: Much of the building's fabric and fittings have been imported from suppliers in India to keep with tradition

Sacred: An image of the Golden Temple of Amritsar takes pride of place in the new Gurdwara

Mr Gurnam Singh Dhami said: "The material and all the facing stone come from India or Rajasthan. All the stone is made in India, all the design is made in India, and then it has been shipped here by about 50 containers."

The site occupies a commanding position adjacent to the existing gurdwara on Berkeley Street, near the Henry Wood Hall.

Gleaming: State of the art kitchens will feed hundreds of worshippers with vegetarian meals

The site was until recently used as a car park although historically it was part of the Glasgow Eye Infirmary which was destroyed by fire in 1971.

Its location in the central Anderston district of the City affords excellent accessibility to the Sikh Community, not only within Glasgow, but also the West of Scotland and Central belt regions.
