Council says sorry for admin mistake that has Jordanhill thinking homes fight is lost

Residents sent the wrong note suggesting plans for more than 400 homes had been passed.

A council bungle left residents in Jordanhill thinking a controversial planning application for hundreds of homes had been passed - when it hadn't.

A number of people received the wrong form from city planners when they submitted their objections to Cala Homes' plans for the former college campus site.

Instead of an acknowledgment letter, objectors were sent a 'Notification of Decision' which suggested the plans had been approved.

Local campaigners say the error led to "significant confusion" in an already complex planning row.

Hundreds of residents are opposed to a scheme submitted by Cala Homes (West) for 412 homes on the former Strathclyde University campus site on Southbrae Drive.

The planning application was only lodged at the beginning of March, and objections and representations don't close until April 21.

It's not thought the application will be determined before August.

Tom Hamilton, a member of the Jordanhill Community Council working group co-ordinating residents, said the bungle had caused much consternation.

He told Glasgow West End Today: "The notification of decision letter from the council was dated March 28 when the application was only lodged at the start of March - and we are still in the statutory consultation and neighbour notification period.

"The 'decision' bit was left blank but residents who were contacted believed this meant it had been approved.

"This has naturally led to significant confusion for local residents already trying to deal with and understand an extremely complicated and confusing process."

One resident who received the wrong letter, said: "On contacting planning I was advised that this has been sent erroneously, presumably to all who commented on application.

"Not very professional."

A follow-up letter sent by the council on March 30 offered an apology for the mix-up.

It says: "Glasgow City Council offers our sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused.

"If you have any questions about this administrative error please contact planning administration."

The local community council is co-ordinating a campaign against the scale of the proposed development.

Objectors say they want developers to stick to a figure of 364 homes that was agreed in principle in 2013.

They also want fresh traffic surveys carried out and have submitted alternative plans that would guarantee public access to sports pitches on the site and for public amenities to be included.

Hundreds of residents have attended two public meetings held since Christmas in response to the plans.

An appeal to raise a £10,000 fighting fund for the campaign has already seen more than £2,000 donated by local residents.

Cala Homes has says the number of homes set out in Strathclyde University's permission in principle application in 2011 was purely indicative.

It says the scheme will improve the derelict site and retain 40 per cent of the site as open space.
