Donations: volunteers sifted through items on the day

Items collected included warm winter clothing, jackets and coats, adult sanitary items and children’s stationery.

The collection took place at the Scout hut in Kelbourne Street in North Kelvinside.

Batool Hasan thanked everyone who donated items on the day.

She told Glasgow West End Today: “We packed 141 boxes – this was made up of items donated on the day and also collections that were held in Coatbridge and Gargunnock the day before and brought to Kelbourne St.

“We also raised £470 between the massage, raffle, cake sale & general donations, which will be used towards shipping costs.

“It was a busy day with a steady flow of people, loaded with bags, coming in throughout the event.

“We had a fantastic team of helpers who worked really hard and were so lovely to work alongside.”

In addition, one donation came in from a woman who raised £355 for the charity by running The Great Women’ Run.

The charity has three more events planned at the end of August/beginning of September.

Campaign: seven years of war for Syria

The boxes will be shipped out in September to arrive in Syria at the beginning of November.

It is the third shipment of donated aid from around Scotland heading to the war-torn country.

The charity’s latest campaign has been highlighting the seven years of war suffered by people in Syria.

Claire Macaulay, founder of SAFR, said: “Scottish Action for Refugees (SAFR) collects warm winter clothes for men, women & children, personal care items and school supplies to ship out to refugee camps each year.

“This year we will be working with one of our partner charities Hand in Hand for Syria, who will transport these and distribute them as part of their winterisation programme in Syria and to support schools there.”

Watch: Aid boxes are filled at events taking place across Glasgow

The current campaign asks people to get involved and suggests 7 ways to help: Collect clothes; Help a schoolchild; decorate a pencil case; raise funds; donate money; give your time; spread the word.
