Taxi driver Robert offers NHS staff free journeys as a thank you amid virus crisis

The gesture has been warmly received by both the healthcare and wider Glasgow communities.

A kind-hearted Glasgow taxi driver is offering free lifts to all NHS workers.

Robert Malcolm, a longstanding Glasgow Taxi driver, has placed signs throughout his vehicle which read “NHS workers ride for free – just show me your ID”.

The gesture has been warmly received by both the healthcare and wider Glasgow communities.

Robert said: “It’s a time for us all to pull together and this is something I am able to do.

"These dedicated people are working under intense pressure so if this one small gesture helps them it’s worth it.”

Glasgow Taxis remain fully operational on the streets at the present moment.

'Generous'

Drivers are finding themselves doing a variety of jobs such as delivering messages to the elderly and medicine to the sick.

Dougie McPherson, Glasgow Taxis chairman, said: “Robert’s offer to NHS workers is both generous and quite moving.

"He is a credit to himself and the epitome of the spirit of Glasgow and, indeed, the city’s taxi drivers.

“Every Glasgow Taxi driver – like everyone right now – is facing their own challenges and circumstances and we are working round the clock to support them as much as we can in a rapidly-moving situation.

"While Robert’s amazing gesture is a financial one, all our drivers are contributing greatly in different ways to keep the city moving and supplies reaching their destination, as well as doing all we can to ensure the isolated and vulnerable are supported and maintain access to the things they need.

'Proud'

"We’re immensely proud of them all.”

Glasgow Taxis has proactively introduced a stricter cleaning process this month and made available higher strength sanitising products for all drivers.

The company has asked drivers to make sure vehicles are strictly sanitised between all hires in response to the Covid-19 outbreak which reached the city earlier this month.
