Glasgow Coffee Festival kicks off with 50 outlets taking part

Fifty independent coffee businesses are taking part in the 10-day event.

People need to support coffee shops now more than ever because they “enrich our communities and support the local economy”.

That’s the message as Glasgow’s annual coffee festival gets under way in the city.

Rather than the festival taking place under one roof as it has since its inception in 2014, the event has adapted to the challenges of coronavirus and spread city-wide.

Fifty independent coffee businesses are taking part in the 10-day event.

And fourteen of the businesses are in the West End.

A ticket will entitle festival-goers to access all the deals and discounts on everything from free coffees to cannolis.

Anyone who buys a £5 ticket has the potential to make more than £500 of savings across the ten-day festival.

Lisa Lawson, Founder of Dear Green Coffee Roasters, first developed the coffee festival six years ago.

'Hospitality'

She said: “Great hospitality is what Glasgow is known for and our industry needs support right now.

“Anyone who starts a coffee shop, a bar or a restaurant takes a massive risk, but in doing so they enrich our community and support our local economy.

“We are showcasing the best cafes Glasgow has to offer, a handpicked list of businesses who have skilled roasters, talented barista and excellent standards of service.

“At times like this, independent businesses need consumer support.

“I want to encourage everyone in Glasgow to get around the city and to know where their best local cafe is, otherwise many small businesses won’t survive this uncertainty.

“By coming together on initiatives like this, we can show strength in numbers and all support one another whilst encouraging a culture change to support local rather than coffee chains.

“With collaboration and creativity, we independent business owners can face the current economic crisis together.”

Lead sponsor La Marzocco has been with the festival since the beginning and is continuing to provide support as it pivots to its new format.

Meanwhile, Safe2Go has provided free use of its recently launched contact tracing solution to all participating coffee shops free of charge for the duration of the festival, so festival drinkers can enjoy their coffee safely.
