Got Soul Choir: 'Our concert at Hyndland Parish Church will be a fantastic event'

The choir's soul repertoire stretches from Stevie Wonder and Earth Wind & Fire to Sister Sledge, Chaka Khan and Lauryn Hill.

One of the UK's leading community choirs is in rehearsals for a Scottish tour next month that promises to be full of soul.

Got Soul Choir has four choirs in Scotland - with one based in the West End of Glasgow.

Next month, the singers take to the stage at Hyndland Parish Church with a show of uplifting soul music.

The choir sings soul classics from Stevie Wonder and Earth Wind & Fire to Sister Sledge, Chaka Khan and Lauryn Hill.

Choir founder and nationally-respected choir director Maryam Ghaffari has 25 years-experience in the music industry.

She and the choir have worked with stars such as Gareth Malone, Take That and Mica Paris.

'Fantastic & family-friendly'

Maryam told Glasgow West End Today everyone was looking forward to the West End concert - one of four on a tour of Scotland.

Maryam said: "The concert is going to be a fantastic, family-friendly event, full of soul music - uplifting, dancing - an just joyful music and sound.

"The Got Soul Choir gives my life meaning and purpose - it mean's everything to me.

"The smiles on people's faces, the difference it makes to them and their lives - it's just so worth getting up for in the morning.

"People come along to sing at Got Soul Choir because there's laughter, there's fun and there's a bit of soulful singing.

"And it's a vibrant community of friends, really.

"It's become a little bit of a soul family. We call it our soul family."

The Soul Roots Tour concert will include festive favourites given the Got Soul treatment.

Great year

The concerts are the culmination of a great year for the community choir.

Not only has Got Soul Choir performed at Edinburgh’s Hogmanay Street Party, Glasgow Pride and Edinburgh Festival, they also joined Take That on their 30th anniversary Tour at the SSE Hydro.

Maryam has a first-class honours degree in music with visual practice from the University of Brighton where she became a guest lecturer.

She said: "I set up the choir in 2012 to bring people out of loneliness and isolation through a fun, community activity.

"It was set up as a charity and it has just grown into a community throughout Scotland now, which is wonderful."

There are now four choirs in Scotland - in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Fife and Dundee.

And Maryam revealed: "We have plans for more choirs, especially we are thinking of setting up children's choirs across Scotland.

"That's a really exciting project we are looking to launching hopefully in the New Year."
